25th anniversary of the Mangystau Korean ethno-cultural union
Today, in honor of the 80th anniversary of Kazakhstani Koreans and the 25th anniversary of the Mangystau ethnocultural union, a solemn event was held at the regional Music and Drama Theater after N.Zhantorin.
There was a time when the Stalin regime viewed Soviet Koreans, living in the Far East, as potential collaborators of Japan in a possible war with it. Therefore, on August 21, 1937, a top secret decision on the eviction of the Korean population from the border regions of the Far Eastern Territory to the Kazakh SSR and the Uzbek SSR was adopted.
100 thousand Koreans were relocated to Kazakhstan against their will. The settlers were mixed up in all areas and despite the bitterness of resentment, actively joined in the arrangement of a new place and work activity. Now about 107 thousand Koreans live in Kazakhstan. About 800 Koreans live in the Mangystau region.
The Head of the region Eraly Tugzhanov noted the merits of those people who contribute to the social and economic development of the region and the country as a whole by their diligent work. He emphasized the merits of the Honorary citizen of Aktau city, the Honored financier of RoK Pak Andrey Pondyunovich, who was at the origins of the creation of the Korean NCC (National Cultural Center). Ogai Kiponi Khaksenievich - the first well-known oilman-Korean has immortalized his name on the territory of the Caspian Sea. The new deposit "Ogayskoe" was named after him; it was discovered by geologists 10-15 km from the well-known Tengiz field. Chagay Boris Gisebovich was one of the most famous doctors in the Mangystau region, who made a significant contribution to the development of medicine not only in the region, but also in Kazakhstan.
There was a congress of Koreans residing in the Mangystau region in 1989 in Aktau, where a national and cultural Korean center was established. Since then, the Korean ECU (Ethno Cultural Union) has been actively involved in the social life of the region.
"This year we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Koreans living in Kazakhstan and the 25th anniversary of the regional Korean ECU. Today, our Koreans have become an integral part of multinational Kazakhstan. Despite the migration, in the post-Soviet period, representatives of some ethnic groups of the republic remained in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan has become a home for many of them. Our region, the city of Aktau, was also raised by people of different nationalities. Many of them remained here to live, took root and consider Mangystau their homeland," - said Akim of Mangistau region Eraly Tugzhanov.
